Boxelder Bug Extermination in Eau Claire, WI

BY 1ST CHOICE PEST SOLUTIONS WI

Boxelder extermination works when it happens outside, before October. Boxelder bugs come back to the same Wisconsin homes every fall because of the house itself: a sunny south or west wall that holds heat, with small gaps around the siding, windows, soffits and utility lines. 1st Choice Pest Solutions closes those routes and treats the walls where the bugs land.

We treat homes for boxelder bugs across Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Green Bay and the towns in between. A one-time treatment runs $275 to $375, and our recurring plans cover them from $37 a month.

Are Boxelder Bugs Harmful?

Boxelder bugs do not bite, sting or carry disease, and they do not chew wood or breed indoors. A heavy infestation still causes real problems:

  • They stain. A crushed bug leaves a reddish-orange smear on curtains, carpet and trim.
  • They smell, especially when you vacuum up a few dozen.
  • They wake up on warm winter days and crawl toward windows and light fixtures.
  • They keep coming out of the walls all winter, because that is where they spent it.

How We Get Rid of Boxelder Bugs

  1. Seal the routes. Your technician checks siding corner joints, window and door frames, utility and dryer vent openings, soffit and ridge vent screening, foundation sill gaps and the weep holes in brick. Some of it gets sealed on the spot. Some is carpentry or siding work you schedule separately, and we will tell you plainly which is which.
  2. Treat at the right time. A residual product goes on the sunny walls, the foundation, around windows and doors and under the soffit line, applied in late summer or very early fall, before the bugs start massing.
  3. Catch them on the way out. For houses with a long history, we pair the fall treatment with a spring visit, so the treated walls also catch bugs leaving in spring.

What Does Not Work

  • Hardware store sprays on the siding kill the bugs you hit and miss the hundreds behind them.
  • Dish soap and water works on contact only, so the next wave lands minutes later.
  • Bug bombs and foggers indoors never reach the bugs inside the walls.
  • Spraying inside a wall through an outlet leaves dead bugs that draw carpet beetles.
  • Cutting down the boxelder tree rarely helps, because the bugs fly in from well beyond your yard.

Vacuuming does work indoors. Use a shop vacuum or a bag you can throw away right after.

Boxelder Bug Questions

Are boxelder bugs dangerous?

No. They do not bite, sting or carry disease, and they do not damage the house. The problems are stains, odor and sheer numbers.

Why do boxelder bugs come back to the same house every year?

Three things: a sunny south or west wall that holds heat, small gaps in the siding and trim, and the scent left by bugs that wintered there before. All three are fixable.

When is the best time to treat for boxelder bugs?

Late summer through early fall, before they start massing on your walls. A treatment in November does much less, because most of them are already inside the walls.

Do boxelder bugs lay eggs in my house?

No. Every bug you see inside over the winter came in during the fall, which is why sealing before cold weather matters more than anything sprayed in January.

Will cutting down my boxelder tree get rid of them?

Usually not. Boxelder bugs fly in from trees well beyond your yard. Removing a female boxelder growing right against the house can help, but sealing and a timed treatment do far more.

How much does boxelder bug control cost?

A one-time treatment runs $275 to $375. Our Basic Insect plan covers boxelder bugs with three exterior treatments a year, starting at $37 a month.
